This July Andy, known on the road as Two-Wheel Limey, will fire up his motorcycle in Lethbridge, Alberta and begin a 4000-mile journey that is about far more than hitting the open road. Over nine days he will ride through Nevada, Arizona and Wyoming, stopping along the way to raise awareness and critical funds for the Prostate Cancer Centre (PCC). His goal is to spark conversations and inspire action.
For Andy, this mission is personal. In 2019 a routine doctors appointment led to a life changing discovery.
“I went to see my family doctor for something completely unrelated” he recalls. “He said to me, given you’re now 50, I would recommend getting tested [for prostate cancer]. That PSA (Prostate-Specific Antigen) blood test revealed a high level, and then from there I was diagnosed with cancer. I had no symptoms, I didn’t feel any different, so it was a shock.”
Thankfully early detection made all the difference. Within three weeks of his initial diagnosis, Andy was able to see a urologist at the PCC where they discussed treatment options. After consideration, he decided to undergo a robotic prostatectomy, given it was the least invasive option.
Now coming upon six years cancer-free, Andy credits that early test for potentially saving his life. “If my doctor had not sent me for that test, it could have been another five years before we caught it. It could have been a lot worse. So now I tell all the guys I know who are in their 50’s, go and get tested. It is just a blood test”.
Andy’s journey is raising funds to support the PCC’s life saving work including free PSA testing through the MAN VAN®, a mobile clinic offering accessible men’s health screenings across Alberta. He encourages every man to take the first step. “You do not even need to enter the van to start. Just talk to one of the volunteers outside. They know what they are talking about, I guarantee you within 10 minutes you will be in the van and getting tested.”
So why a motorcycle ride?
“For me, riding a bike shuts the stress out” Andy says. “You forget everything when you are on the bike. It reminds you there is more to life than just working your butt off to pay a bill. It gives you that bit of freedom. And after cancer you realize life really is too short to be worrying about everything else”.
Andy’s Two-Wheel Limey ride is more than a personal adventure. It is a powerful call to action. Every dollar raised goes directly to the PCC to support early detection, groundbreaking research, and mental health programs for men and their families.
Ride along. Speak up. Support the cause Andy says. Because one person on two wheels really can make a difference.
