The Prostate Cancer Centre (PCC) is proud to highlight its growing partnership with Carbon Psychology, a Calgary based counselling provider dedicated to fostering resilience, connection, and emotional wellbeing. This collaboration is helping men across Alberta better access tailored psychological support as part of PCC’s commitment to comprehensive, wrap-around care.
Carbon Psychology is a clinical mental health practice focused on personalized, compassionate care. Their team of experienced psychologists and counsellors work with individuals to address a wide range of concerns including anxiety, depression, grief, stress, identity, and life transitions. Using evidence based therapeutic approaches, Carbon Psychology tailors care to each person’s unique needs while prioritizing accessibility, community partnership, and stigma reduction.
At the core of Carbon Psychology’s practice is a strong belief in building meaningful therapeutic relationships. Their work emphasizes empowerment, personal growth, and the understanding that mental wellbeing is a fundamental human right. By fostering connection and community, Carbon Psychology supports not only individual healing but broader wellbeing as well.
The roots of this partnership began with initiatives Katrina Shaw, Carbon Psychology Founder and Chief Clinical Director, created aimed at providing community, resources, and tools for men to support their mental health. PCC partnered with Shaw’s office and began referring men to their programs and resources at a time when many were experiencing increased isolation and mental health challenges.
In 2023 Carbon Psychology was founded as a way to provide more structured, counselling-focused support that aligned closely with men’s health needs. Building on this connection, PCC and Carbon Psychology formally established their partnership in early 2024.
The integration of Carbon Psychology into PCC’s services has been purposeful and streamlined to support men who may be experiencing mental health concerns. Men over the age of 18 across Alberta are encouraged to visit a MAN VAN® mobile clinic, where they complete a PHQ 9 mental wellness assessment. If a participant’s score indicates elevated symptoms of depression, a mental health nurse from PCC follows up to offer a counselling opportunity.
For men who choose to proceed, the PCC nurse books their initial appointment directly with a psychologist at Carbon Psychology. The first session is an introductory phone call designed to help the client connect with the practice, discuss their goals for counselling, and begin building a supportive therapeutic relationship.
This approach creates a warm and seamless hand off from PCC’s screening process to clinical care, helping men feel supported, understood, and guided at every step.
The initial counselling session with Carbon Psychology is fully covered by the Prostate Cancer Centre. If patients choose to continue with sessions, Carbon Psychology offers a reduced rate to reduce financial barriers to continued support
By removing financial barriers at the point of entry, PCC and Carbon Psychology aim to help men connect with mental health support that can make a meaningful difference in their lives.
This partnership reflects PCC’s commitment to supporting the mental health of all men across Alberta, regardless of circumstance. Emotional and psychological wellbeing are essential components of overall health, and access to timely, compassionate support can make a meaningful difference. Through collaboration with Carbon Psychology, PCC expands its network of care and strengthens its ability to meet men where they are.
Together, PCC and Carbon Psychology are helping to break down barriers to mental health care and offering men pathways toward resilience and healing at a vital time in their lives.
