Canada Safeway Foundation golf classic drives for charities

A rather chilly morning did not dampen the enthusiasm — nor funds raised — at the Canada Safeway Foundation 12th Annual Charity Golf Classic held July 25 at Priddis Greens Golf and Country Club. That the event raised more than $800,000 for myriad charities in Western Canada is nothing short of astounding. Areas of support include breast and prostate cancer research, nutrition education and hunger relief programs, as well as support for families living with disabilities. Specific examples of charities in Calgary benefiting from the Safeway Foundation’s generosity include: the Prostate Cancer Centre; Bill Brooks Prostate Cancer Benefit; Wood’s Homes Foundation; Boys and Girls Clubs of Calgary; and Easter Seals Alberta. Since the tournament’s inception in 2002, more than $10 million has been raised for charity. This year’s tourney saw nearly 300 participants representing 95 companies. And that nearly 200 Safeway employees volunteered to ensure the tournament’s success is a shining example of the can-do attitude of the super folks at Safeway.
